MARIETTA, GA - The Columbian Chemical Co. fuel cell team received FuelCellSouth’s Crystal Flame Innovation Award In Industry for the development of DURA-lyst™, the company’s PEM (proton exchange membrane) fuel cell electrocatalyst. This catalyst shows improved platinum dispersion and improved durability—important advances promoting the commercialization of fuel cells.
The award was accepted by Columbian’s Stewart McKenzie, director of business development, on behalf of the entire fuel cell team during the FuelCellSouth 2005 Conference in Columbia, South Carolina, last week. Entrepreneurs, researches, manufacturers and service providers who are engaged in activities that serve to foster growth in the fuel cell marketplace are eligible for nomination in the awards program.
“The fuel cell team has done a remarkable job developing world-class catalysts in a reasonably short time by leveraging our core competence in carbon technology,” said James P. Berresse, president and CEO of Columbian Chemicals Co. “We continue to push the envelope in anticipation of developing the next generation catalyst material that will assist in the future widespread commercialization of fuel cells.”
Columbian Chemicals Co. is one of the world’s leading producers of carbon black – an engineered material that improves the strength, durability and overall performance of a range of products including tires and other mechanical rubber goods, as well as inks, paints, plastics and coatings.
Based in Marietta, Georgia, Columbian Chemicals Co. is a subsidiary of Phelps Dodge Corp., one of the world’s leading producers of copper. Columbian Chemicals Co. owns and operates 12 carbon black manufacturing facilities in Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Korea, Spain and the United States.
